| Certification Program Name: | 802.1Q VLAN Tag Propagation |
| Certification Program ID: | 10732 |
| Certification Program Category: | Cisco Interoperability - Advanced Features |
| Description: | This verifies that the device can properly identify and propagate frames carrying IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tags. |
| Interpretation: | Devices earning this certification have demonstrated the ability to maintain and recognize 802.1Q tags in conjunction with the Cisco router. That is, WAN links can be part of a VLAN with the VLAN number encapsulated in the L3 packet. (As 802.1Q is a layer 2 protocol and all layer 2 fields are stripped off at the L2/L3 boundary, it must be encapsulated inside the L3 packet.) |
| Product Applicability: | This certification is applicable to all WAN routers implementing VLANs. |
| Testing Overview: | The two devices will be configured for 802.1Q. The Tolly Group will then generate a stream of traffic between the devices and verify that both devices can transmit and recognize/receive the traffic assoociated with the configured VLAN. The contents of the priority bits, located inside the 802.1Q field, are considered irrelevant since IP has its own priority field. (Note: This TV was updated on 30Aug2004 to remove references to the "priorty" bits as they were deemed irrelevant.) |
