| Interpretation: | In order to assure effective operation in a network, compliance with the IEEE basic specifications for Power over Ethernet is essential. Devices earning this certification have demonstrated the ability to provide power to the powered devices which conforms to the IEEE 802.3af standard.
NOTE: During the IEEE 802.3 plenary meeting which took place from March 5, 2006 to March 9, 2006, the associated IEEE committee unanimously agreed that the standard regarding the PSE output voltage and current during a short circuit condition has a conflict issue and this issue has been referred to the IEEE 802.3at DTE Power Enhancement Task Force ("PoE Plus") for possible inclusion in the IEEE P802.3at draft as a path into the IEEE 802.3 standard.
Based on the decision on this interpretation request, The Tolly Group has decided to rule out the output voltage and current specifications during the short circuit condition for our 2006 certification. |
| Product Applicability: | The certification is applicable to all devices offering connectivity to powered clients like VoIP phones, access points and IP cameras. Typically, this device will be a LAN switch. |
| Testing Overview: | Engineers will employ a Sifos Technologies PowerSync Analyzer PoE test tool and run a canned 802.3af conformance test to validate compliance with the IEEE 802.3af parameters. The PSE PoE legacy mode is disabled if any. Engineers will test 42 parameters for the PSE’s monitoring AC MPS component and 38 parameters for the PSE’s monitoring DC MPS component.
